We’re big on anniversaries here at the newspaper, and I guess in the news media in general. It seems like any time there’s a significant anniversary of a significant event, we run out to find someone who remembers it. I put together a big documentary project on the 70th anniversary of the Hurricane of 1938.
With something like the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the anniversary is something we cover every year because it still holds so much significance to so many people. This video came together at the last minute when several Montville police officers who went to Manhattan to help with the recovery effort agreed to sit down and share their memories. I was fortunate that one of them was willing to share her photos with us. Photojournalists made many memorable images in the wake of 9/11, many of which I’ve seen over and over. It was nice to see images that came from someone else’s point of view.
