For the third episode of our Song Spinner series, Rick Koster and I recorded the jazz/hip-hop band Above/Below in the New London apartment of one of the band members. The past two Song Spinners were just one musician with a guitar, so I was able to shoot it myself with two cameras. Since this was a whole band, I had intern Jeff Langan help me out with a third camera. The band ran through the song “The People’s Bailout” twice, and we mixed footage from both performances with an audio track from one. Recording the audio turned out to be a bit of an adventure as Gabe Chandler, the vocalist, didn’t have a P.A. I had enough mics and cords to give him a mic wired directly into the camera. A second mic was used to mix in the ambient from the band.
