This assignment was a particularly run-of-the-mill one: local WNBA team holds a press conference to announce the signing of a free agent. I would have looked at the sports editor who gave me the heads up on this a funny look if not for a couple of things: his instinct for videos has always been good, we get decent traffic on Connecticut Sun coverage, and the player, Kara Lawson, has been one of the most hated WNBA players in Connecticut because she went to Tennessee.
Mike DiMauro, the sports editor/columnist with whom I do most of my sports video work, suggested that we have the teams other newest player, UConn alum Renee Montgomery, do the interview for us. Renee and Kara both have experience as analysts on ESPN, so we figured they’d be good on camera. Mike fed Renee a few questions and let her take it from there. What we got was a fairly amusing piece that offered a different view on a press conference, and a piece that stood out from any of the other media there.
