On Board an Ice Breaker

Twenty five degrees, snow turning to sleet turning to rain. Perfect day for a cruise on the Connecticut River! The Coast Guard cutter Bollard is charged with keeping the river clear for commerical boat traffic throughout the winter. The crew took me along for a ride today. The cold was no problem, but the moisture was. I forgot to bring a towel, so I was constantly trying to mop the front of the lens with a fleece glove. Then there was the condensation from going into the heated pilothouse. My rain cover doesn’t accomodate the wireless receiver, so I had to do interviews with the camera about 18 inches from the subject’s face in order to hear him over the engine noise and the sound of cracking ice. That ice was seriously loud. And did I mention there was no room on the little boat for me to put a tripod?
