Record Flooding in Southeast Connecticut

At the end of March, it rained for three days straight. On the first day of major rainfall, rivers weren’t particularly high. I knew that the actual “news” was probably a day or so off, so I shot some scenes from around my house and worked with my partner in crime Rick Koster to put together a humorous, if somewhat morbid, look at the rainy day.

The second day of the storm, I set out to follow the flow of water from the hilltops to the rivers in the Norwich and Montville area. When I got to the rivers, I found out that the flooding was extremely serious. The video I ended up producing was sort of a hybrid between my original idea, a somewhat prosaic look at the rainfall, and the actual hard news coverage.

It turned out that the most serious flooding was further south and east in coastal areas like Old Mystic, Pawcatuck and Westerly. Reporter Jenna Cho and I set out to Old Mystic to document the residents and local firefighters as they dealt with the aftermath of the high water.
