Rick has been writing an online column for a while, but we’ve recently decided to convert it into a video column. This was our second column. Rick wrote it the night before we shot it, which gave me time to collect some thoughts and draw up a storyboard, which made shooting and editing very easy. One or two of the shots were improved on the spot, but the rest drawn up in advance. Shooting a scripted column is very different from a normal journalistic video story, where I go shoot what happens and then assemble a story after. Since I have the ability to direct the subject when shooting a column, I try to keep the photography and editing to a higher standard. There’s no excuse for a bad shot or bad sequence when I have total control over the shoot. I would be easy to eat up a lot of time doing retakes, but the idea behind doing the column is that we can shoot and edit it rather quickly. So we try to get it right on the first take.
